The texture of the tofu may vary from very soft, fragile to extra-firm depending on how much it is drained and pressed. Each type suits various types of dishes. The best type to use tofu in tofu salad recipe is firm or super strong; something softer would crumble for this recipe.
Let’s see a bit about the origin of this amazing tofu salad recipe and then we will move toward our recipe.
Origin:
Tofu originated in China, as did many soya foods. Legend has it that a Chinese cook, who accidentally curdled soy milk when he added nigari seaweed, discovered it some 2000 years ago. Tofu was first introduced into Japan in the 8th century and was originally called ‘okabe’.
This mango dessert recipe is so simple to cook and will be a favorite of your entire family! Okay so, Let’s move to the tofu salad recipe without any delay because I’m super excited for it.
Ingredients:
For Marination:
- 5 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 4 tablespoon maple syrup
- 3 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 3 tablespoon sesame oil
- 4 tablespoon hoisin sauce
For salad:
- Chopped romaine lettuce
- Sliced cucumber
- Sliced cherry tomatoes
- Chopped red bell pepper
- Chopped spring onion/ green onion
- Grated carrot
- Pickled ginger
- Sesame Seeds
- Chopped Basil
- Avocado
Directions:
Tofu Marination:
- Before you continue marinating it, press the tofu for about 20 minutes. You can use tofu press if you have it, otherwise you can also place tofu on a plate with another plate stack over it. Keep stacking some books or heavy pot over it to press the tofu.
- Mix the garlic powder, soy sauce, onion powder, maple syrup, ground ginger, rice vinegar, sesame oil and hoisin sauce to make marinade sauce.
- Cut tofu into cubes when the it is pressed, and place it into a dish. Pour over the marinade sauce and turn over the cubes of tofu, so both sides have marinade sauce. Let them sit for 30 minutes in the sauce.
- Heat up a frying pan with a little bit of sesame oil. Extract the tofu from the marinade and grill until golden brown. Remove the remaining marinade sauce with a tablespoon of cornstarch, then spill over the fried tofu and fry until thickened.
Assemble the salad:
- To assemble the salad, add Chopped romaine lettuce, Sliced cucumber, Sliced cherry tomatoes, chopped red bell pepper, chopped spring onion, grated carrot, pickled ginger, chopped Basil, avocado and tofu.
- Mix them well and serve it with sesame seeds and sauce topped over it.
Note:
The tofu type that is best for salad is firm or extra firm tofu. We keep pushing the tofu to make it much firmer, then marinating and frying it. Using regular type of tofu will break it during the process and will crumble in the salad.
Freezer Instructions:
You can freeze it for 2 days if you have any leftover, but don’t keep it in refrigerator for a long period of time because it contains fresh food and it won’t last too long.
